Ten Paces and Draw

I was so excited when I was asked to participate in this week's Ten Paces theme... Greasers!

Baltimore Artscape

This is Baltimore's 30th Artscape. This year the theme is 1982, the year the first festival was held.  I contributed the images from the Words of Wisdom greeting cards I made a few months ago. The one image in particular of Randy Savage was used in promotions for the event (undoubtedly due to his untimely passing, RIP Macho Man) and the Baltimore Sun even ran a story about Artscape on their website and featured my image!

Yesterday I went and took pictures of the 8-foot tall vinyl banners they made for the event. They were on the outside of the karaoke tent, which was a pretty busy area... the easiest the way to get people out of my way to take pictures was to pose like dorks in front of them.

I think they turned out super clean, especially considering the 4"x6" size of the original image! Nice of them to put my name on there, too.  And to my surprise, Randy was incorporated into the huge 40-foot signage tower at the entrance.

Artscape continues today and Sunday, so go eat some funnel cake (for $$) and watch some live acts for free!

Ten Paces and Draw

I was very happy to be given the opportunity to take part in Alyssa Nassner's ongoing project called Ten Paces and Draw. Illustrators are given a theme, asked to create a sketch based on it. Then, the sketches are exchanged, and each artist takes another persons sketch to the final stage, with about a three day turnaround.

This week's theme was "Dream Date."

My sketch was of a girl on an interstellar motorcycle ride with Glenn Danzig. In an interesting turn of events, Danzig was morphed into Robert Pattinson in Rachel Dougherty's final version!

The final I worked on was about a nerdy scientist time-travel dino date!

Vend Send Mend

Vend Send Mend is a project started by two of my former classmates, Craig Bowers and Jee-Shaun Wang.  It is a fundraiser for disaster relief in Japan, and over 60 artists contributed work to be auctioned off for the cause.  Here was my piece for the event, I decided to an experimental collage piece:

Tomorrow I'll resume scramblin' to get my finals done by spending all day building a little man out of wood and sheet metal.

Fraktur part deux

I finally got the chance to upload the couple of images I managed to get out of my fraktur class. I was really most interested with the lettering, and I wanted to make a couple cards with some ornately drawn names on them. The top one is for my boyfriend Nick, the bottom for my mom.

I was really trying to stay within the fraktur style here, but I did let a couple little things of my own creep in. I think I'll let this stuff subtly influence some future projects.

Lettercult and Taufschein

Lettercult is an amazing website that focuses on custom lettering from around the globe. A few of pieces of mine (some alphabets, some wrestlers) are being listed on their site for their annual "Best Of"!

This morning I went to Lancaster, PA to take a class on fraktur, a decorative lettering and ornamentation style developed in the mid 1700s by the Pennsylvania Dutch.

I had a great time, but the class went by so quickly that I didn't get a chance to finish my fraktur. Look forward to a heathen's adaptation of Mennonite art in my next post!

Happy March, y'all. I've seen lots of people doing two-tone sketchbook experiments lately, so I think it's subconsciously influenced me. I kind of cheated, these little ditties are three color'd.

Carcass Week!

What a hectic month I've had! First of all, my boy and I've moved into a new apartment, and moving commanded most of my time these past couple weeks. The apartment came with an adorable cat who was left there (hrmph) by her previous owner. I re-named her Bird... she chirps sometimes.



Last week I completed a t-shirt design based on a news article. The article can be viewed here. What's believed to be the world's oldest cemetery was found in Jordan, and archaeologists found fox remains buried next to the human remains, and were treated similarly. This led scientists to believe that the foxes may have been kept as pets.

Based on this project and the items we moved into her apartment, Bird probably noticed our fascination with skeletons, oddities and the like. The day after Valentine's Day she gave us a gift: a tiny dead mouse!



She must have known it was the perfect size for the piece I am currently working on for Thesis. I've never tried taxidermy before, but the internet gives you pretty easy step-by-step instructions. I've been a vegetarian for several years now, so it took about an hour to muster up the courage to make the first cut... but after that it was surprisingly easy.





i've spared you the gory details. the second one is for scale... I'd have to say it would probably be easier to stuff a bigger mouse, but I took what I was given. In a future post, I'll show you what this little guy gets used for.

I've decided to try to sell some things on inPRINT! Only one print up now, but more to come very soon!

The Perk got slimed.

I hung up some illustrations and other things at Patterson Perk earlier this week.  They should be up at least through the end of January.



I also just recently made this fun wall sculpture with a couple antlers I found at the flea market and some wooden beads.




Extinct now, obviously.

If you're in Baltimore, it's cold and awful outside.  So what the hell are you doing at Patterson Park? Come by Patterson Perk at 2501 Eastern Avenue and get a cup of coffee to warm up.

Flappy New Year!

One year closer to the Apocalypse. Can't wait!

So far I've had a pretty productive break. I finally started and finished the portrait of my grandparents that I'd been promising them I'd do for a while.

...I tried.  I shaved a couple years off 'em.

Then I decided I'd do a couple little pieces for fun. These are going to be hanging up in Patterson Perk on Eastern Avenue, along with some framed collages, the Wanderin' mind, some wacky wall sculpture I'm finishing now, and more!

And for good measure, here's a peek at my thesis as of the end of fall semester.

Next semester I'll be making four more box constructions, and then documenting all of the pieces and putting them into a hand-bound book.
