LA Record

I did a couple full-page illustrations for the current issue (#111) of LA Record.

First is to accompany an article about Kathleen Hanna's newest musical venture, the Julie Ruin!

Also did this to accompany an interview with Trina Robbins, author of "Pretty In Ink," a book about female cartoonists coming out soon from Fantagraphics.

Toxic Holocaust

Excited that I got to make a shirt for a band I've been a fan of for a long time, Toxic Holocaust!

Had a lot of fun with this one. I got to passive-aggressively take out my rage toward dumb crusties.

Wrinkles in: Depth Perception

The second installment of the Wrinkles saga is complete. This comic is printed on an 11x17 piece of paper, cut and folded into a meandering accordion booklet. They are black and white, with black laser-cut museum board covers.

Scooter and Carl Do Cincinnati

 Last Spring semester I had the pleasure of doing an independent study with Ted McGrath, and he helped me to make these "action figures." They are more like sculptures, or mock-ups for vinyl toys that will likely never be.  They are based on a series of ten collage sketches I did earlier in the year... other characters like "Dr. Singh, Male Gynocologist" and "Ben the Lonely Spaceman" never made it to the third dimension. Scooter and Carl started like this:

The figures and accessories are clay over wire armatures, with hand-sewn little shirts and clothes. The boxes were constructed of mat board and painted with goache and ink.


Scooter and Carl are currently en route to Cincinnati to see my friends at Static Age! They will be in a show called "Pairs," so if you are in the area, go check it out! Scooter and Carl are just for looks, but I'll have things for sale there too.

Words of Wisdom

So, I've been working on these cards for weeks now. They are just for fun, not class, but I'm selling them at school. Packs of greeting cards, five in each pack! The cards will be banded together with a little cardstock belt:















Pretty excited about how they turned out! The colors are a good bit more acidic on the screen than they will be once I get them printed tomorrow.  I'll have them ready for MICA Art Market on the 8th.

Time for bed. I think I've driven myself insane looking at nothing but these screaming men for the past 48 hours.

E. Wok T. Shirts! ...(T. Rex rules)

Hot off the presses, just got my shirts from Scott Archer, and they turned out great!

A big 'ol print on soft 100% cotton shirts.

The blue is for the ladies, natural for the dudes. I only had one mannequin (of the busty female variety) so guys, no worries, this shirt doesn't actually give the illusion of DD breasts.

IT'S COMING

Star Wars? You want some mores.

     So, as I mentioned in a previous entry, I've been doing a lot of Star Wars drawings lately.  The following illustrations were produced for an RA training handbook for this year's RAs at MICA.  I was really excited about the whole Star Wars theme, so I took advantage of having some extra time, and I ended up being able to make the drawings pretty detailed.

Each is the header page for a different section of the book.  Some of the terminology may be strange to outsiders, but the RAs will get it.

      Hilariously adding the names of the actual Residence Life staff to their respective Star Wars counterpart. Scott Stone, Director, is George Lucas, birthing his employees from his powerful brain (read: neck.)

And last, but not least, (actually, probably my favorite drawing of all) here is a little spot illustration of a motivational Ewok.

      Today I'll be hanging some artwork at the Charm City Art Space!  This will be the first show at the new Space, so I'm definitely excited to show some stuff. The show, curated by the lovely and talented Veronika Volkov, is called "Front Porch Stories." I plan to throw some Star Wars drawings in there, along with some other new pieces. The show opens tomorrow, August 12th!  Stop by CCAS within the next month to catch it.  Or just kill two (sick sick) birds with one stone, and go to one of the many awesome shows happening there soon.
